i use nod32, and it's great. its been having issues connecting to the update server lately, however...i used to use kaspersky, but it has compatibility issues with my firewall, ZoneAlarm.

started out with mcafee a couple years ago when i first got my laptop, but was persuaded by a friend of mine to try kaspersky, and there was a noticeable increase in performance when i made the switch.i used comodo for my firewall along with kaspersky, since ZA and K don't get along with each other very well. comodo was ok, but kind of a system hog.

then that same friend of mine suggested i try nod32, and i actually like it better. partly because i can use ZA again. it's a really great firewall, though it can be a little overzealous sometimes..i still havent convinced it to let my irc client connect to the internet...

ZA also has an antivirus utility, but i have it disabled in case it gets in nod32's way.

we should talk about firewalls too, since those can be...important. XD

Almost exactly what I did, but I started with Norton. I used the regular home product, then switched to the corporate edition when I realized it was a little "lighter" on my system. Then Kaspersky, which was a small improvement, then NOD32 -- I love it.

I have to use McAfee at work - not a big fan, but the corporate version we use is pretty light ... Not as good as NOD32 though.

Ah, firewalls... I can't stand software firewalls. I swiped a retired Dell from work and installed ClarkConnect. It's a linux distro with a nice web based interface, you can use it for a file server, web server, router, firewall, antivirus server.. long list. I'm running a basic setup - it blocks everything inbound that I don't have a forwarding rule for. Outbound stuff is my responsibility - I just don't install anything I don't trust. Plus NOD32 catches the really bad software.

Cool thing with my ClarkConnect router is squid - It's a 20G cache of recently accessed webpages on the router. Whenever you visit a page it checks the updated date/time from the server, and loads the local copy instead of waiting to download a new copy. Makes for some speedy browsing.

what program are you useing for irc as i use trillian and it works fine with zonealarm.

and yeh firewalls are importaint but for me there less importaint than a good virus scaner as the odds of getting hacked are far less than getting an infected email or visiting an infected site.

and tru saiboogu the hardware firewalls are supost to be better but from what i have hered there not that good and nothing more than xpesnsive paper waight

I'm with you on the virus scanner being the most important part. I do like the extra layer of protection the firewall gives though - there's no way to remotely connect to any PC at my home unless I explicitly allow it. And I like having it in a standalone device because it's more reliable, doesn't waste resources.. And if it fails, it cuts me off the internet. A software firewall could fail so that I was wide open.

lol, i dont have a router...i mooch my internet from someone in my neighborhood that is sharing a wireless network.

nox - i don't know that my irc client has a name...it's just a cracked mirc.exe i got from a friend. i could mess with it more and try to figure it out, but its not that big of a deal since i dont spend a lot of time online, and never really have time for irc.

On my laptop I have Kaspersky AV 2009, PC uses Symantec Norton AV (I find Norton easier to use)
