Have you really compared your system with Norton installed and not? I gave up on it when I built my new dual core, 2GB machine ... Everything was speeding along while I installed software, until I installed Norton. The next few installs crept along, things were more sluggish - more like my old machine performed. Uninstalled Norton, back to normal. Installed Kaspersky (I also heard good things about NOD32 when I was researching lightweight AV, just tried K and stuck with it), and the slowdown with AV installed was minor.

It simply isn't possible for an AV scanner to not have an impact on your system. Unless it isn't doing anything. You're talking about a process that is intercepting and scanning, in realtime, every file being read from disk and every bit of data coming in from the network. Some scanners do it quicker and use less RAM - Norton isn't one of those.

I will say, I Googled around for a minute to find some hard numbers to support this. I didn't find RAM usage, but I found some speed tests that supported Kaspersky being fast, but NOD32 was far faster. I'll give it a shot soon.

well i havnt noticed my system slow down at all. I know it does slow down on some level, because of what it does. But my system hasnt yet showed any sign of slowing. Mabye its just because my system is so new. I dont know, but nothing yet has slowed.

Speaking of this, how good is the new Windows defender for Vista?

I havnt really used it, but I heard it was upgraded into an ok program, as opposed to the XP defender. If its good enough to keep me protected, I might just use that.

It's not going to slow down more than it is now (not just from Norton, though other bloatware will get to it), it's already running slower than it would without Norton. That was the point. I guarantee that if you uninstall Norton and try a few things out, it will speed up. Install a fast scanner like NOD32, and while it will slow down again, it will be much faster than Norton.

Edit - Reread your question and realized something - Windows Defender won't do anything to replace an AV program. Nothing at all. It only pretends to be a malware proggy, and not a good one at that.

Windows Defender truthfully doesn't do much besides keep track of whether or not your firewall and AV are operational. Use a good AV to avoid malware installing (even an AV that doesn't specifically target malware will be triggered by some of the sneaky ways that they install), then run several different malware scanners on a regular basis. None of them catch everything. I use Spybot & Adaware, myself.

Be real careful picking a spyware / malware scanner - more of them on the market ARE spyware than not. There's no reason to pay for any of them, either - the two above are among the best (there are other good ones, just my favorites) and both are free - though they do have higher end versions available.
